Why do all of their tops suck?
Messages: 2, Likes Received: Initially I had planned to go for a legit Gibson, but I quickly found out that they were well out of my price range. I can't personally justify spending much more than 1k on a production guitar, what with my poor man's income. I looked at the Gibsons and most of their tops were insanely unremarkable.
I looked through the Epiphone's and even their tops were generally nicer looking. I was on sweetwater if y'all wanna go have a look. All of the Cherry bursts are splotchy and very meh on the Gibsons. One of the "Ocean Blue" Traditional's looks nice, but the one with last digits "" just looks weak. Anyway, yeah. I'm such a loser nerd. Since Sweetwater is awesome and uplo pictures of the guitars, I'm able to share the wonderment that should be at my door in the near future. Here's to hoping something bad doesn't happen during shipping! Messages: 1, Likes Received: Epiphones are nice but I just dislike the hetock.
Don Vito likes this. Epiphone uses plain maple tops with a figured veneer on top. Gibsons use proper figured maple tops, it is harder to find nice figured tops with proper thickness. Veneer is considerably cheaper, and most of the time it comes from a nicer piece of wood but it is paper-thin.

For most Gibson-style finishes I think they look nicer than those elaborate and very highly figured pieces. And like others have said, Epiphones use thin veneers over plain maple tops, or sometimes right on top of the mahogany body. If you had to pay for a full top with flame that consistent then they'd move right out of the competitive price bracket.
Pikka BirdAug 12, My guess is many of them also go overseas Japan had the nicest gibsons I've ever seen. Because Gibson doesn't give a crap about giving you value for your money, they know people will buy them regardless of the quality of the flame top. It amazes me that builders like Carvin have so much awesome looking wood and make their guitars affordable, yet people still pay 2x-3x as much for a guitar with spotty build quality and mediocre materials just because of the name on the hetock.
